About Dan Aykroyd (1952 – )

Dan Aykroyd was born on July 1, 1952, in Ottawa, Ontario Canada.

Actor Peter Aykroyd is Dan's brother. His mother, Lorraine Hélène Gougeon, was a French Canadian and worked as a secretary. His father, Samuel Cuthbert Peter Hugh Aykroyd, was a civil engineer. His grandfather was an active officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

He married actress Donna Dixon in 1983, and they have three daughters:Danielle, Bell, and Stella.

In 1994, Dan Aykroyd received an honorary Doctorate from Carleton University. This is the same university that he was enrolled at, in 1969, majoring in Criminal Justice, but had dropped out before finishing. Perhaps he was bitten by the performing and writing bug.

Dan Aykroyd originally may have wanted to follow in his grandfather's footsteps and work in law enforcement. He still is a big supporter of police, and occasionally rides shot gun with Ontarion police detectives. He owns a business in Ontario with some police friends.

Aykroyd's best-known film role is probably that of Elwood Blues from the Blues Brothers; (1980). Elwood first appeared as a character in a 1977 TV movie, Things We Did Last Summer. Aykroyd reprised Elwood again, in 1998, with Blues Brothers 2000.

A huge blues fan, Dan Aykroyd and Isaac Tigrett co-own The House of Blues. Aykroyd also has a blues band with actor Jim Belushi, who was the brother to the original Blues Brother, John Belushi, who died way too young because of a drug overdose.

Aykroyd had an uncredited role, in 1988, with the character Roman Craig, in She's Having A Baby; a role he originated in The Great Outdoors.

In the 1989 film, Driving Miss Daisy, Dan Aykroyd earned an academy award nomination; Best Performance of a Supporting Actor, for his portrayal of Miss Daisy Werthan's son, Boolie Werthan. For this performance, he also was nominated for an Interactive Achievement Award.

In the 1998 animated hit, Antz, Dan Aykroyd was the voice of Chip. In 2010, Dan was the voice of Yogi Bear in the animated film, YOGI BEAR. In 2013, he was the voice of the scarecrow in LEGENDS OF OZ: DORTHY'S RETURN

Dan Aykroyd has played Dr. Raymond Stantz in three movies – Ghostbusters, Ghostbusters II, and also uncredited in Casper.

Besides having a long list of 95 acting projects and voice-over work, Dan Aykroyd has been a successful screenplay, video and TV show writer, entertaining people of all ages. His first effort, THE BEACH BOYS: ITS OK;(1976) was a combined effort with John Belushi, Lorne Michaels, and Alan Zweibel.

ALSO IN 1976-1979, Dan wrote 56 episodes for the comedic skits performed by the "Not Ready for Prime-Time Players", on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. He was one of the writers honored with a 1977 Primetime Emmy.

Dan Aykroyd considers himself a writer first; actor second. He was involved with the writing the screenplays of many of the films in which he was an acting participant. In 1980, Dan Aykroyd and John Landis wrote the screenplay, THE BLUES BROTHERS. Other films that he wrote/co-wrote include: SPIES LIKE US;(1985), GHOSTBUSTERS;(1984), DRAGNET;(1987), GHOSTBUSTERS 11;(1989), NOTHING BUT TROUBLE;(1991), CONEHEADS;(1993), BLUES BROTHERS 2000.

Canadians are very proud of his accomplishments. Dan was awarded the Order of Canada in 1999.
