About Dana Elcar (1927 – 2005)
Dana Elcar; (birth name Ibson Dana Elcar), was born on October 10th, 1927, in Ferndale, Michigan, the son of Danish immigrants. His mother was Hedwig (née Anderberg), who worked as a nanny. His father was James Aage Elcar, who worked as a carpenter and a butcher. Dana grew up on the family farm, and showed his acting talent early by mimicking radio personalities with his brothers and sisters in the family barn.

On June 6, 2005, Dana Elcar passed away in Ventura, California, due to complications from pneumonia, at the age of 77.

Dana Elcar was unlucky in love, and was married and divorced three times. Among his wives, he had four children: Dane, Nora, Chandra, Marin; and a step-daughter, Emily. He finally found the love of his life, Thelma M. Garccia, whom he lived with for many years.

In the mid 1970s, Dana Elcar wanted to help young thespians to learn their craft. He founded L.A. Actors' Theater. Later, in 1986, Dana founded the Santa Paula Theater Center, with fellow actor, William Lucking. Dana enjoyed being the artistic director at their theater center.

Dana Elcar went to college at the University of Michigan. Dana supported himself by driving an ambulance and by being a cab driver while he studied drama at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. He fine-tuned his thespian skills under the tutelage of the well-known acting coach, Sanford Meisner.

Dana started his acting career on the Off-Broadway stage, and developed a rich repetoire of experiences there and at other theatres. He wowed theatre fans with such performances as MOON IN CAPRICORN, PROJECT IMMORTALITY, RICHARD THE 111 opposite George C Scott, and Harold Pinter's early stage plays; THE CARETAKER and THE DUMBWAITER.

Dana Elcar at first found work on television, being cast for popular soap operas;GUIDING LIGHT IN 1952, A TIME TO LIVE;1954, and THE EDGE OF NIGHT; 1956. Other soap operas followed during his acting career, such as DARK SHADOWS;(1967), and THE DOCTORS AND THE NURSES;(1964-1965).

Dana's career took off as a character actor. Being a versatile actor, Dana became a popular guest star on a variety of TV series and TV movies in the 1960s', 70s' and 80's.

He was especially in demand for the various cop and detective shows, such as THE DEFENDERS;(1964-65), NYPD;(1967), MANNIX;(1968, 1970, and 1973), COLUMBO;(1973), BARETTA;(1975), THE F.B.I;(1968-1973 , CANNON;(1975), FOUL PLAY;(1981), HILL STREET BLUES;(1985), and LAW AND ORDER;(1993).

Elcar was best known for his role on the MACGYVER television series; (1986-1992), playing Peter Thornton. In 1991, Dana Elcar went blind from Glaucoma, but he didn't let it stop doing what he loved; acting! "The fact that you are losing your eyesight does not mean you have forgotten how to act." - in a speech to the National Federation of the Blind in 1991.

Dana Elcar required special computer equipment to read printed text for the rest of his life. When he started losing his sight, series writers for MACGYVER wrote his condition into his character. His blindness was also written into his guest appearance on LAW AND ORDER, and his last TV guest star gig, on ER;(Season 8, Episode 13 - 2002)

Though Dana Elcar wasn't in a tremendous amount of films, he picked his projects carefully and did some fine roles with talented actors. His first big film with Henry Fonda and Walter Matthau, was FAIL SAFE, in 1964. In 1981, he was in another film, BUDDY, BUDDY, with Jack Lemmon, and again with Walter Matthau. In 1984, Dana was in ALL OF ME, with comedians Steve Martin, and Lilly Tomlin.
