About Colleen Dewhurst (1924 – 1991)

Colleen Dewhurst was born on June 3, 1924, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. On August 22nd, 1991, she passed away in South Salem, New York, from cervical cancer.

Dewhurst was known for her stage work as a great tragedienne. Colleen Dewhurst was nominated for 6 Tonys: as Best Actress (Dramatic), in 1962, for GREAT DAY IN THE MORNING, in 1964 for THE BALLAD OF THE SAD CAFE, in 1968 for MORE STATELY MANSIONS, in 1972 for ALL OVER and in 1973 for MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA and as Best Actress (Play), in 1977 for WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?

In the 1985 television movie, ANNE OF GREEN GABLES, Colleen Dewhurst played Marilla Cuthbert, the no-nonsense adoptive mother of the title character.

In June of 1988, Dewhurst played Mary Tyrone in LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT on Broadway opposite her son, Campbell Scott, who portrayed Edmund Tyrone.

Colleen Dewhurst married and divorced actor George C. Scott twice. Their son, Campbell Scott, appeared in 1991, on screen with Colleen Dewhurst in DYING YOUNG.

Colleen Dewhurst won 3 Emmys and was nominated another 8 times. She won first as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Special for BETWEEN TWO WOMEN, in 1986, for her portrayal of a mother-in-law in her 14 year relationship with her daughter-in-law, (played by Farrah Fawcett). Her second win was as the opinionated museum curator mother of the edgy title character, MURPHY BROWN, in 1988.

Dewhurst passed away just two days prior to the Emmy Award Ceremony in which she was posthumously awarded a third Emmy for her guest appearance on MURPHY BROWN as Murphy's mother.

The Canadian-made TERMINI STATION, filmed in 1989, was released in the U.S. after her death in 1991.
