About Christopher Plummer (1927 –)
Christopher Plummer was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Award for his performance in THE LAST STATION.
Christopher Plummer was born on December 13th, 1929, in Toronto, Ontario Canada. He was the only child of Isabella Mary and John Orme Plummer. Christopher Plummer's real name is Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer.
This Canadian leading man began his acting career on the stage, performing a lot of award-winning stage work, and becoming well-known and appreciated, since his early years. Whether in Canada, England or on Broadway, Plummer is well-known as being a fantastic Shakespearean actor in the 20th and 21st century. He has nailed the roles as Hamlet, Iago and Lear, and other stage characters. Plummer also branched out and found great success in other more modern plays, and was rewarded for his efforts, with acclaim, and awards.
Out of six Tony nominations, Plummer won two Tony Awards. One was in 1974, for CYRANO; Best Actor in a Musical. In 1997, his second Tony Award was for the play, BARRYMORE; Best Actor. Plummer also was nominated six times for Emmys, and won twice.
While Plummer's dynamic acting style was well-received on stage, it didn't transfer well to the film medium. However, his film career began to take off, after working with Liz Talyor, on the set of the film, CLEOPATRA;(1963). Liz Taylor was a marvelous teacher, and helped him make the transition to film, learning from her about the difference between perfoming on stage, and portraying a character in a film. Plummer was grateful to Liz Taylor for her help, and has long given her the credit.
Though a late bloomer in the film medium, Plummer has proven through his many films that he is gifted in both comedy and drama. Plummer won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor when he was 82 years old. He has the distinction of being the oldest person to recieve an Academy Award!
Plummer is particularly effective in sinister roles, playing black-hearted villains with no redeeming values. These roles are a lot of fun to play.
That said, however, Plummer's career-defining role was that of Baron Von Trapp, the heroric, squeaky clean patriarch of a family of his children in the huge hit, THE SOUND OF MUSIC;(1965), playing opposite of Julie Andrews in this musical adaptation of the stage play. Ironically, he despised the role and film during the time he was making it, but has mellowed a bit in his opinion, which he explained in his book, DESPITE OF ME.
Christopher Plummer keeps himself very busy, not letting the fact that he is in his 80s' slow him down at all. He continues to work in three to five projects a year; splitting his time between films, voice-over projects, and TV work.
Christopher Plummer is happily married to his third wife, Elaine Taylor, who is the love of his life.
