About Cher (1946 –)

Cher began her entertainment career as a pop singer with husband Sonny Bono as the snarky half of the SONNY AND CHER duo.  Her birth name is Cherilyn Sarkisian.

She was born in El Centro, California. Cher continues her incomparably successful singing career today, having been active through nearly 5 decades and being the only artist to win a Grammy, an Oscar, an Emmy, 3 Golden Globes and a Cannes Film Festival Award.

Early in her acting career, Cher starred in the 1969 movie, CHASTITY, produced and written by her husband and musical partner, Sonny Bono. Cher played a lonely young woman, hitchhiking across the country with a dark past.

In 1983, Cher appeared in the movie SILKWOOD, as Meryl Streep's roommate and possible industrial spy.  At Mike Nichol's insistence, she performed without any makeup.  She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in SILKWOOD

In 1985, Cher appeared in Peter Bogdonovich's MASK, portraying the biker-chick mom of a sensitive child born with a malformed skull, who tries to give her son a normal life. Cher played another unconventional mother in the 1990 movie, MERMAIDS.

Cher won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her unforgettable role in Norman Jewison's MOOSTRUCK (1987) as the know-it-all, world-weary young widow, Loretta Castorini. Engaged to a dull middle aged man, she falls in love with his volatile, sexy, younger brother; (played by Nicholas Cage) on a night of grand opera, drenched in moonlight.

Next came THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK, with Jack Nicholson, who plays a demon who grants wishes and sexual favors. Cher, a sculptor, and her two friends, the trio of women get more than they had bargained for in their dealings with him.

In 1992, she appeared in the ensemble cast of Robert Altman's movie, COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME, JIMMY DEAN, JIMMY DEAN, as Stella, a wise-cracking waitress.

For Franco Zeffirelli's TEA WITH MUSSOLINI, she played a wealthy American who is the secret benefactor of a group of ex-patriot British women; (nicknamed "The Scorpioni"), under house arrest in Italy in World War II.

In 2010, Cher starred in BURLESQUE, as a former dancer and struggling club owner in the fantasy of the "magical"; (never seedy), world of burlesque dancing.
