Charlize Theron won her Best Actress Oscar for her brilliant potrayal of America's first female serial killer, Aileen Wuornos.

Along with Djimon Hounsou, Charlize Theron was the first African actor /actress to be nominated for an Academy award.

ABOUT CHARLIZE THERON (1975 - )

Charlize Theron was born in a little farming village, Benoni, in South Africa. She was the daughter of Frenchman Charles Theron and German mother, Gerda. Though both of her parents were born and raised in South Africa. She grew up on a farm. Her biggest passion in her childhood was dance and ballet. Unfortunately, her father, Charles had a drinking problem and turned into a raging drunk one day, and attacked her mother. Gerda was forced to shoot Charles with a gun, when Charlize was 15 years old. It was ruled a self-defense killing.

At 16 years, Charlize Theron won a modeling contest and tried modeling in Europe. She went to New York a year later, but decided to go back to her first love, dancing. Charlize Theron danced with the Joffrey Ballet in such performances of The Swan Lake and The Nutcracker Suite. During this time, she injured her knee which ended her dancing career!

Charlize Theron went back home to South Africa, but not for long. Her mother bought her a one way ticket to Los Angeles in 1994, to try to get employed in the film industry as an actress. After a frustrating day of being turned down by Hollywood agents, Charlize Theron went to the bank to cash a check her mother had sent her. When told that the bank wouldn't cash an out of state check, Charlize Theron showcased some of that Theron temper and gift of gab, providing one and all a free, impromptu, riveting performance. An agent standing in line was so impressed, he gave her his card, offering to be Charlize's agent if she learned English.

Two years later, Charlize became her film career in her first speaking role, 2 DAYS IN THE VALLEY, which got her the role in THAT THING YOU DO! Other films were to follow. For her role in MONSTER, she gained 30 pounds. In just 9 years after coming to Hollywood, it is amazing that Charlize Theron earned a Best Actress Award. She obviously is talented in the dramatic arts as well as the expressive art of dancing and modeling.
