Many movie fans first noticed Charles Durning as the crooked cop in
the Oscar-winning smash hit THE STING (1973). He again played a police detective and chief negotiator in the 1975 tense, true crime drama, DOG DAY AFTERNOON.The story of a New York bank robbery turned hostage situation. The Al Pacino as one of a pair of robbers, attempting to steal enough money for his gay lover's sex change operation.
Since then,
he has had many memorable parts including: the President
in TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING (1977). Charles Durning played a shady businessman
in TRUE CONFESSIONS (1981), He plays a singing, dancing governor
of Texas in THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS (1982, an
Oscar-nominated turn). Charles played Nazi in TO BE OR NOT TO BE
(1983, another Oscar nomination).
He played a regular in the television comedy show EVENING SHADE. The show ran for 4 years, from 1990 - 1994.
In the Coen Brothers movie, O, BROTHER WHERE ART THOU? [2000], Durning plays the curmudgeon governor and good ol' boy, Pappy O"Daniel, who plays an instrumental role in returning the escaped cons to the outside world.
