Elwes was born the third son to interior designer Tessa Kennedy and the late portrait painter Dominic Elwes. Cary Elwes is the brother of producer Cassian Elwes. Cary's paternal great-grandfather was Chamberlain to the Pope.Elwe's mother is of Anglo-Irish and Serbo-Crotian heritage.
Growing up in London, Cary Elwes attended Harrow. After graduation, he moved to the United States and studied acting at Sarah Lawrence College. Elwes studied German Expressionist Film in college.
In 1984, Cary Elwes made his film debut in ANOTHER COUNTRY. In 1986, Cary was chosen to star in the acclaimed historical epic LADY JANE.
Cary Elwes married Lisa Marie Kurbikoff, a still photographer in 2000.
