About Carroll Baker (1931 –)

Carroll Baker was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, on May 28, 1931. She has enjoyed fame as both a serious dramatic actress and a movie sex symbol. The daughter of Virginia and William Watson Baker, a traveling salesman, Carroll spent a year at community college, then worked as a magician's assistant.

Carroll began her film career in 1953, with a small part in EASY TO LOVE. She then appeared in several television commercials and trained at New York's Actors Studio where her appearance brought her to the attention of director Elia Kazan, who cast baker-imageBaker as the title character in his controversial film, BABY DOLL.

Her performance in this film is what Carroll is best remembered for as an actress. Carroll was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role.

Two months prior to BABY DOLL's release, Carroll Baker appeared in the supporting role of "Luz Benedict II" in the film, GIANT, opposite Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean.

Carroll Baker went on to work steadily in films throughout the late fifties and early sixties, appearing in a variety of genres.

In 1964, she received more notoriety for her portrayal of a Jean Harlow-like movie star, in THE CARPETBAGGERS, and for her work in lead roles in the films, SYLVIA, and HARLOW; both released in 1965.

Unfortunately, Carroll's second marriage to husband, Jack Garfein, ended and Carroll opted for a change of scenery and moved to Europe. She kept up with her acting in Europe, starring in hard-edged thrillers, including: THE SWEET BODY OF DEBORAH; (1968), PARANOIA; (1970), and BABA YAGA;(1973).

Carroll Baker returned to America in the late seventies with a lead role in Andy Warhol's BAD (1977). In the eighties, Carroll moved into character work, playing the mother of Dorothy Stratten in STAR 80; (1983), and as Jack Nicholson's wife in IRONWEED; (1987). In 1990, Carroll played a villainess; the dastardly mother of a nasty drug dealer, in the Arnold Schwarzenegger film, KINDERGARDEN COP.
