About Austin Pendleton (1940 – )

Pendleton is best remembered as the wealthy patron in WHAT'S UP, DOC?;(1972), and the pathetic killer, Earl Williams, in THE FRONT PAGE; (1974).

Austin Pendleton graduated from Yale University.   He directed Elizabeth Taylor in a 1981 revival of "The Little Foxes,";  the Lillian Hellman play.  He was nominated for a Best Director Tony.

In the 1970s, Pendleton was an actor, director and playwright at Steppenwolf in Chicago. Pendleton played Lt. Col. Moodus in Mike Nichols' CATCH 22, in 1970.

Pendleton's talent got him both comedic and dramatic roles. Austin Pendleton was an ensemble member of the cast of MY COUSIN VINNY. in 1992. This film tells the story of a comedy of errors when two New Yorkers are mistakenly accused of a murder while traveling through the south. Pendleton was also part of the ensemble cast of the award winning drama, A BEAUTIFUL MIND, with Russell Crowe, in 2001.

Austin Pendleton was in the movie, LOVELY BY SURPRISE, in 2007.  He had been offered the part of a car dealer, but wanted to play "Jackson," the professor role, which had been offered to Frank Langella, who turned it down.  Pendleton wheedled an audition for the role, enchanted the director, who he said, "was just blown away. He started jumping up and down, and he’s like, 'Are you sure you’re available for this?' So that was how I got that part. It’s a beautiful part.
