An actor of many films, Andy Devine was known as a large happy fella. He grew up in Kingman, Arizona. Andy actually played semi-pro football under a phony name, Jeremiah Schwartz. He used the false name so he could continue to play college football.

Andy Devine went to Hollywood with big dreams of becoming an actor. His first good part, was in a talkie, called THE SPIRIT OF NOTRE DAME. He was given this part partly because of his football record.

There were a lot of doubts about his career due to his high pitched raspy voice which was a result of a fall that Andy Devine took as a child with a stick in his mouth. However, instead of his voice becoming a hindrance, it became his trademark.

For forty-five years, Andy Devine became a very popular and beloved comic figure in a large variety of films. His popularity rose to new heights with his starring role as Jingles, in ADVENTURES OF WILD BILL HICKOK, in 1951. In 1955, Andy Devine hosted a children's show called ANDY'S GANG. Children all over the world became his newest fans.

Andy Devine played Hap Gorman on the first season of NBC TV's FLIPPER in 1964.

Captain's Anchorage, a fine restaurant in Big Bear Lake California, was once owned by Andy Devine. When Andy Devine owned the restaurant, it was a sportsman's bar where a lot of gambling took place.

The story so goes that the accountant's office was upstairs over the bar and the accountant was known to steal all the gambler's winnings. The restaurant has always claimed that it is haunted by the accountant. On almost every wall in the restaurant, you will find pictures of Andy Devine in his different films.

Jimmy Buffett mentions Andy Devine in his song PENCIL THIN MUSTACHE.
